The Lure of Shiny Things – Updates and Addons and Expansions, Oh My

When it comes to online games (and some single player ones as well), sometimes I’m a fair weather friend. I have to be in a certain frame of mind to pop in for a week or two. For example, I need to want to drown in glorious storytelling to pop into Star Wars: The Old Republic. That said, when something new comes down the line, it catches my eye.

This past Friday, the brilliant folks at Cryptic released a high resolution screenshot of the new Kumari Andorian Escort and it is SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME LOOKING. The moment after I saw that picture, I was opening Star Trek Online.

Lovely, isn’t she? I’m exceptionally curious about the statistics, but more details are said to be forthcoming sometime later this week.

This event has allowed me to notice this trend in me, where an expansion, update, addon, and so forth pops up for one of my games and it rekindles immediate interest. When the Slingshot DLC came out for XCOM Enemy Unknown, I was there. The 1.0.7 patch for Diablo III dropped and I was ready. Sometimes I’m up for a night of play and by the next day I’ve got my fix and I move on. Other times (like with XCOM) I’m in for a full week or four of all out gaming.

Thanks to the beautiful Andorian ship above, I’m currently in the middle of scratching my STO itch. Last night I got some Diablo III in though for variance.

What do you call a person who bounces from game to game in an indeterminate fashion?

A gamer.

Until next time!

  1. Sounds like they’re adding this ship into the C-Store. I must admit, she’s a very beautiful ship. But for an Andorian ship pack at 5000 Zen points, I just hope it will be worth it.

Looks like it’s a race between them developing the ship and my need to gain 5000 zen points for the Vesta ship pack. I can only afford one, which shall it be?

    • Yeah, that’s if all three designs are significantly different enough to warrant a Vesta-style “ship pack”. My purchase is entirely dependent on the stats though. I prefer cruisers, so I’m going to have to see.

  2. I called it, it was indeed a ship pack. They released more info on the ships (http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=821871). I did have a feeling they were going to aim for a tactical ship pack considering the Odyssey focused on engineering and Vesta on science. The stats look pretty good overall and the timing could be just in time for me to get the Zen together.

Going to get it and review it?

    • I love this ship pack. I’m definitely getting it (it’ll be weird running an Escort when I’m so used to Cruisers). I don’t know if I’ll be reviewing it. It really depends on when I get the pack. Typically I write about something that occurs to me Monday morning, so we’ll see what happens by then.

      • Well I did some number crunching. If you’re a freebie like me, it’s going to take you about 2-3 months of dilithium – about 90 days for the 5000 Zen (subject to change based on dilithium exchange rate).

I hear you, mate. I like the Long Range Recon, it was very comfortable and handy in terms of ship abilities I can put on her. I own a cruiser and I can never overcome the turn rate, but a tough ship no less. Now I use an escort considering the firepower and turn rate is absolutely necessary to get some dailies done as quickly as possible.

  3. I’m a lifer, but even then it’s 10 months of just sitting around until I can afford it… right now I have around 1700 Zen, so I’d need 3300 more and that’s 7 months. So, looks like I’m throwing a few bucks at the game to get what I want.

I’m loving my Regent-class. So durable. Oh, to get a better turn rate, look into a high-end RCS Accelerator. Makes all the difference on the Assault Cruisers. Also, invest in broadsides. I’m looking forward to having a hot rod escort in my stable of ships, but I’ll always head back to my Iowa.

Update: Yup, threw some cash at the game to get 3000 Zen, then sold some dilithium to make up the other 300. Ready for the Andorian Escorts to show up, but I might not be able to play with them until Friday.
